After a cool May, it feels as though the season just started. But horticulturally, we had a rich and productive spring. Many people report getting blooms on plants that have not shown color in years. Those of us who braved the cool temperatures and rain to head outside were rewarded with an unparalleled display of floral color.
In June, we still enjoy the later spring flowers, but some of this bonanza is fading as we begin the transition to summer. Just as did Mother Nature, gardeners put their attention to color in May, getting the annuals in the ground, and now we must turn to controlling the rest of the garden before it takes over!
June, therefore, is when we recommend the first major trimming and pruning of the season. Check the property’s perimeters for vines and weed trees, to remove them before they get out of hand. Remove the foliage from spring bulbs as well as the stems from spring flowers. With that done, it’s time to fire up the barbecue, sit back, and enjoy the scenery!
