Exquisite pool landscaping, tight deadlines and event preparation near the Jersey Shore
Winner of Excellence in Landscape Design Award from the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association, 2004
The homeowners' architect recommended bringing us in to design and install the landscape for a new pool installation, providing the advantage of having the landscape designer work closely with the architect and client early in the process – as the pool, decks and pool house were being planned. Our joint objective was to create a back yard landscape with the pool as the central feature, making it a comfortable place to live and play for the homeowners and visiting grandchildren, as well as a spectacular setting for this prominent couple to entertain. We also wanted to ensure that the front landscape would be equally inviting, complementing the back and appropriately accommodating overflow from crowds during parties around the pool.
The home is in a new, upscale development near the New Jersey shore. Thus we faced the divergent elements of a very large home on a naturally flat landscape. Issues of scale were made paramount by the locale, yet time was the largest factor with this project. The homeowners had planned a party for nearly 200 guests, and pool installation had been delayed with completion only one week prior to the event. While we had finished the front landscape, we now had one week to complete the piéce de resistance – the back – amid the work of deck cementers, pool house carpenters, lighting specialists and sprinkler system designers.
It was also our goal to leave the site party-ready, so we spent some night hours at the client’s home that we might ensure the efficiency of the space dedicated to the band, hang decorative lights and place moveable planters where they could offer the best evening effect and flow of guests.
