Sometimes
we might feel there’s not much in life we can control,
but how your bushes and trees grow, that you can
control! Too often, however, we let them take over or we
make the mistake of trimming them back. When choosing how
to care for your trees and shrubs, remember these tips:
-
Unlike trimming, which is harmful to plants, natural pruning
can rejuvenate your specimens, promoting new, healthy
growth; your trees and shrubs will live longer.
-
Natural pruning ensures that the plants fit into the overall
design of your landscape.
-
The technique can allow you to use existing plant material
that might otherwise have to be replaced … saving
you money.
-
Trimming isn’t only harmful – it’s time
consuming, requiring frequent care. Natural pruning, on
the other hand, saves you time because it requires maintenance
only once or twice yearly.
-
Always remove dead or diseased limbs immediately.
-
Prune away limbs growing downward or toward the middle
of the tree.
-
Only prune at a joint with another branch; this promotes
healing of the wound and limits the unsightly ‘suckers’
that will grow.
