Serene
Spaces
Most
people, with their busy lives, want their garden to provide
a place of tranquility. Here are a few choices that can
help create that serene space:
-
The sound of water flowing is a great source of tranquility.
If you are not ready for the cost and maintenance of a
major water feature, consider a self-contained fountain
on your patio (it just needs to plug in) or even a water-sound
CD with outside speakers.
-
A screen blocks out surrounding sights – and need
not be a wall. A few permanent plantings or well-placed
planted containers that simply deflect the focus to something
colorful or pleasing often works.
-
Add
seating that you find comfortable and aesthetically pleasing,
and add a table for your book or beverage.
-
Pick the plants for the purpose. You’ll find softness
in blue or gray foliage, and weeping foliage is soothing.
-
Artwork that works outside – sculpture, attractive
containers, bird baths, trellises, arbors – add
a personal touch that makes you feel the space is just
for you, and provides year-round interest.
-
You don’t need a lot of space to create your backyard
getaway – a simple 6’ x 6’ area is enough,
and often the cozy feel of a small space works wonders.
